Spring Cleaning

It's that time of year when people get out their step ladders, pull down those shorts and t-shirts from the top of the closet, and do the old spring-time switch-a-roo. As you're cleaning, and putting things in the pile for the Salvation Army, please put your already-read books aside for the second Great American Book Drive at Central Library at Grand Army Plaza on Saturday, May 16th from 10AM-3PM.

We'll take whatever you've got that's in reasonably good shape from last year's bestsellers to your college poetry books to kids' books your teenager isn't using anymore. Our partner, Better World Books, will then sell these titles and a portion of the profits go back into Brooklyn Public Library's collections budget.  If donating for a good cause isn't motivation enough, we'll also have a $1 book sale, live music by BPL's own Lost in the Stacks and arts and crafts for kids.

And if you don't have books to donate, there's still time to Support Our Shelves by giving a monetary donation, which will also help build our collections, at libraries all over the borough.

This is great! So, do we bring the books on this date? Or can we start donating beforehand?

Hi Lah-
Thanks for the enthusiasm -- and the question. Please bring the books on this date when we'll have people to sort and pack all donations.

And by attending on the 16th, you can also enjoy free music and check out our book sale, from which all proceeds go back into the library's collections. Look forward to seeing you there!

I am a Sabbath observer, and thus cannot make it to a library on a Saturday.
I would also appreciate if BPL could arrange donation stations at several branches across the area in order to facilitate donations.

Hi Michelle-
we do take donations at all branches. You can click here to see what types of materials we accept:

Thanks for your interest in supporting your library.
