Neighborhood Know-It-All: Dancing (and Eating) in the Streets

Something great happens when people take over the streets—especially in celebration with a festival. During late summer and early fall, Brooklyn plays host to several cool street fairs. BPL staffers recommend:

Santa Rosalia Festival, aka the 18th Avenue Festival: From August 28 to September 6, this street fair takes over 18th Avenue between 67th Street and 75th Street in Bensonhurst, with a celebration of all things Italian. Says a BPL staffer, “it reminds me of when I was a kid, and you can eat zeppoles all day.”

West Indian Day Parade: On Labor Day, roughly 3 million people will throng Eastern Parkway to watch and be watched at this huge festival—the culminating event of a week of festivities. BPL will be there, parading alongside dancers and musicians in jaw-dropping costumes.

Atlantic Antic: On October 4, when the weather has cooled a little, it’s a perfect time to go to this miles-long street fair on Atlantic Avenue, featuring 10 entertainment stages, over 600 vendors and rides. Atlantic Antic is a winning street fair, “for the great cakes baked by the church ladies,” commented one BPL staffer.
