In anticipation of her appearance at BPL's 2010 Summer Reading Kickoff, actress, author and Emmy Award winner Sonia Manzano—best known for her role as Maria on Sesame Street —is here to offer us some of her favorite summertime reads.

A New York native, Sonia has appeared as one of television’s most beloved characters for over 30 years. She will be joining BPL this June 10th as we celebrate summer and books with a block party featuring live music, dance, balloon tomfoolery and one very special reading by Sonia herself. It’s all happening on Central Library’s plaza and it’s all free!

To tide you over until next week, Sonia’s favorites:

For Children

1. A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, by Betty Smith

2. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie

3. The Skin I’m In, by Sharon G. Flake

4. Esperanza Rising, by Pam Muñoz Ryan
